In the scope of Covid-19 pandemic, we received the notification of approval for the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia open call:  AI 4 COVID-19: Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in the Public Administration to strengthen the fight against COVID-19 and future pandemics – 2020.

The winning project, CardioFollow.AI, joins the multi-domain expertise of researchers from Fraunhofer-AICOS, NOVA Medical School, Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Lisboa Central – Hospital de Santa Marta (HSM-CHULC) and VOH.CoLAB.

Once cardiac patients are identified as a risk group in the current pandemic context, telemonitoring has allowed the remote follow-up of large numbers of patients at home, enabling the reduction of hospital visits without affecting the quality of care delivery.

At the Cardiothoracic Surgery Service of HSM-CHULCVOH.CoLAB has helped to tackle pandemic limitations with a telemonitoring service that supports clinicians in the follow-up of cardiothoracic surgery patients after hospital discharge. With CardioFollow.AI, Artificial Intelligence (AI) – based modules will be added to longitudinally predict risk and early detect complications.

In this project, we will leverage our pilot in Hospital de Santa Marta to include intelligent and adaptable digital tools. The multimodal data collected from patients’ health pathways will identify risks of complications throughout the follow-up process, namely:

  1. Estimate, in the pre-surgery period, optimal follow-up resources;
  2. Identify patients who will benefit the most from telemonitoring;
  3. Early detect complications at home which leads to prompt medical intervention.

Finally, a value-based study will be conducted to analyze the cost-benefit of digital follow-up in response to the pandemic crisis, and also during regular times, where the optimization of eHealth procedures is of extreme importance for Health systems.
